The Mulan Marine Maritime Education Building at National Taiwan Ocean University
In October 2019, National Taiwan Ocean University held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future Mulan Marine Maritime Education Building. The construction of the building is being facilitated by a donation from Dr. James S.C. Chao, founder of the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Foundation to honor his late and beloved wife, Mrs. Ruth Mulan Chu Chao who is the Chao family matriarch.
Dr. Chao has long been a supporter of higher education. He believes in the transformational power of education and hopes to broaden education’s availability to all. As such, Dr. Chao is also the founder of the Ruth Mulan Chu Chao Scholarship, which provides National Taiwan Ocean University students with opportunities to study in the United States.
The Mulan Marine Maritime Education Building will be built with reinforced concrete and will have seven floors above ground as well as one below ground. The total floor surface will come to 4,985 square meters, and the building will be used as a space for maritime teaching, research, and public service. The foundation looks forward to the new building enhancing the international competitiveness of Taiwan’s maritime education programs.
