Prior to receiving the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award from Lloyd’s List Americas last month, Dr. James S. C. Chao sat down to share his business philosophy and what he sees as the key steps to building a reputation of excellence in the shipping industry.
Dr. Chao stressed that it was never his goal to be the largest shipping company in the world. For him, it was much more important to deliver outstanding service to customers, to be respected by vendors, such as financial institutions, and to develop positive relationships with vessel crews.
Dr. Chao also spoke about his belief in the power of education, something he shared with his late wife, Mrs. Ruth Mulan Chu Chao. Together they worked on a number of initiatives to increase educational opportunities for students in the U.S., China and around the world.
